What Is This Thing Called Mahempe? (Botswana)

Another one from Botswana's dancing musical comedians.

What is this thing called Mahempe? A song? A band? A singer? A dance troupe? A bunch of comedians? The answer...it seems...is yes.

I've featured Mahempe here several times and I'm kind of a fan, even though I don’t quite have them figured out.

Here's what I've gathered. A Botswanan named Motabaseo...sometimes called Mahempe...leads a group of dancing musical comedians...sometimes called Mahempe...who dress in ragged clothes and fake beards and whose music gets the toes to tapping.

Mahempe, the band leader, and some Mahempe band members have guested with other Botswanans, including Astley Gops and several others. The group have a song called “Mahempe” that has ruffled a few feathers and the local press panned one of their performances.

Got it? Good. There will be a quiz. Which I'll probably fail.

All this is by way of calling attention to what might be a new Mahempe song and video. Nothing is certain.
