The Ugandan Pop Star vs. The Ugandan President
A documentary that recounts how Ugandan pop star Bobi Wine faced off against Uganda's President.
Presidents. Sometimes you get a good one. Sometimes a dud. Sometimes they stay in power long past their sell-by date. Some suggest this is the case with Yoweri Museveni, who has been president of Uganda for nearly four decades.
One of the people who put forth this notion was Bobi Wine, "Ugandan opposition leader, former member of parliament, activist and national superstar musician." As detailed in the National Geographic documentary, Bobi Wine: The People's President. Which recounts how:
Running in the country’s 2021 presidential elections, Bobi Wine uses his music to denounce the dictatorial regime and support his life mission to defend the oppressed and the voiceless people of Uganda. In this fight, he must also take on the country’s police and military, which are not afraid to use violence and torture in a vain attempt to intimidate and silence him and his supporters.
I had not gotten around to listening to Bobi Wine's music prior to this, but have featured a lot of music here by Eddy Kenzo, another well-known Ugandan pop star. Who has gotten into a bit of a beef with Wine after Kenzo was appointed as an advisor to Museveni. I'm not sure if the Kenzo vs. Wine feud ranks up there with Drake vs. Kendrick, but the the details are here, if you're interested.
All things considered, I'd prefer to listen to some great music from two great musicians. Scroll down for a popular song from Bobi Wine and check out our Eddy Kenzo playlist.
