Pick of the Week - Roots Rocking Zimbabwe (Album & Book)
Analog Africa's release of a collection of classic Zimbabwean music and an accompanying book were released yesterday.
I've featured a few songs already from Analog Africa's new collection, Roots Rocking Zimbabwe. As a pretty big fan of Zimbabwean music, I guess I'd be remiss if I didn't mention it again - given that it was officially released yesterday. Along with the album (LP, CD and digital), there's also a 200-page book. Here's the blurb for the book, followed by one for the album:
On today's Bandcamp Friday we're coming with two exciting news! While the compilation "Roots Rocking Zimbabwe" is finally out today on LP, CD and Digital, we are honored and proud to release the wonderful book "Roots Rocking In Zimbabwe" by Fred Zindi highlighting incredible music and its story. Originally released in 1985, this masterpiece is now available to a whole new generation of readers! This new 200-pages edition features approximately 100 photographs from the personal collections of Fred Zindi and Samy Ben Redjeb, as well as from the archives of Parade and Foto Action magazines.
The 25 songs presented in this project showcase the birth of the modern music industry in Zimbabwe and the explosion of creativity bands of the 1970s and 80s delivered is endlessly rewarding. It was a time of wild experimentation before established genres had crystallised. Rock, rumba, soul and traditional grooves all collide beautifully in this collection, which also includes never-before-released tracks by Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi and many other Zimbabwean artists!
Analog Africa is one of those labels that you can buy any LP/CD on their label and you know it will be of the highest quality. This new release is accompanied by a book you can purchase that is extremely informative.
