Pick of the Week - Thomas Mapfumo (Zimbabwe)
Taking a week (or more) to celebrate the music of Thomas Mapfumo as he nears his 80th birthday.
Thomas Mapfumo turns 80 on July 2 or 3 (hmmm…). I listened to music by other African musicians before running across a collection of his music way back in the Nineties. But his was the first African music that really caught my ear.
I'm going to attempt to go through all of Mapfumo's albums in order this month (Mapfumothon?). I've reviewed a few here, as well as covering various bits of Mapfumo stuff. You can check it all out at the link below, along with links to his YouTube channel and home page. Stay tuned for more.
