Pick of the Week - Sebongile Kgaila (Botswana)
A selection from the Botswanan guitar music album, I'm Not Here To Hunt Rabbits.
We've featured Botswanan guitarists a number of times so far and we're doing it again. Most of them play six-string guitars with two of the strings removed and they tend to play in an unorthodox style.
YouTube has a bunch of videos of this music and you can check out I'm Not Here To Hunt Rabbits, an 11-song album of music played on guitars and other stringed instruments. It's available at Bandcamp.
It's all worth a listen, but one of the songs that stood out for me, was "Tika Molamu (Knobkerrie Throw)," by Sebongile Kgaila. Who plays electric guitar, in contrast to many Botswanan guitarists, who play acoustic guitar.
Knobkerries, as noted here, are "a combination of throw sticks and wooden clubs, used as everyday tools for hunting, defense, and/or digging in Southern Africa."
