Oliver Mtukudzi Covers Week #2 - "Wasakara"
Taking a week to feature a few cover versions of Oliver Mtukudzi's songs.
We're featuring Oliver Mtukudzi covers again and this time we have two versions of a song identified in each case as "Vuma." The song title is "Wasakara."
First up (above) are the Apa Boys, from Malawi. They're a two-man band featuring guitar and homemade percussion.
Next up, Mwatipatsa Band, from parts unknown (maybe Malawi?). They're also a two-man band featuring guitar and homemade percussion.
Finally, a live version of the song by Mtukudzi, complete with some great dance moves. Here's what the video notes have to say:
This is the official music video for 'Wasakara' (which translates to you’re old) by Oliver Mtukudzi. The song is from his 2001 album titled Bvuma - Tolerance.
According to Genius, 'Wasakara' was supposedly sang for the long-serving Zimbabwean ruler, Robert Mugabe an allegation Oliver has denied.
The long-serving leader resigned from office late 2017, after 37 years as president of Zimbabwe.
Enjoyed all three versions. The first two were so creative with their drum kits -- and those guys were really good. In the third I thought the extra instruments and female singer really added, as well as the dancing.
