Nyami Nyami Records Focuses on Music From Southern Africa
The French label features "unique recordings by some of the most fascinating musicians from the Southern African region"
To borrow their words, from their Bandcamp page, "Nyami Nyami Records is a french label promoting music mainly from Southern Africa. Nyami Nyami Record's mission is to touch the soul and ears of the people with music made with passion, love, respect and talent. Our releases feature unique recordings by some of the most fascinating musicians from the Southern African region through new productions, reissues and rare projects and collaborations."
The Paris-based label, founded by Charles Houdart and Antoine Rajon, has a modest catalog of recordings from the region, but there's nothing there that doesn't look enticing to me. Releases include a mix of the old and the new. From the latter category, there's BCUC, from Soweto, South Africa, and Bantu Spaceship, who hail fom Zimbabwe.
Older works include albums by Robson Banda And The New Black Eagles, Dumisani Maraire, and a couple volumes from the Music From Africa series. Which feature "never-heard South African library music from the early '80s" that found "traditional South African rhythms re-imagined, dubbed-out and disco-fied" by producer Tom Mkhize.
