Paper marks the first-year anniversary. But how about a six-month anniversary? Tear a sheet of paper in half? Anyway, Music of Africa passed that milestone recently.
I decided to write about music back then. All kinds of it. Which a lot of people do. You might have noticed.
One of the pieces I wrote was On The Curious Stylings Of Botswana's Guitarists. About falling into a YouTube rabbit hole of Botswanan four-string guitar videos. They do guitar differently there. But don't take my word for it. Read the article and click here for a bunch of videos.
I've listened to African music off and on for a long time. But the notion that you could dig deep like this got my attention. So I dug. And decided to write about African music only.
Because Africa is a big place (but Africa is not a country, as the saying goes), I decided to focus on music from southern Africa. I was going to write mostly about Zimbabwe and South Africa, but Botswana and Malawi kind of took over.
That's where it stands.
