Brenda Nokuzola Fassie was a popular South African singer. Starting in 1983, she recorded about a half dozen albums with Brenda and the Big Dudes and followed that with about twenty solo albums. She died in 2004, at age 39.
Fassie was apparently something of a larger than life character and was likened to none other than Madonna. I didn't dig around to try to determine how this came to pass, but the reference turns up in articles in big gun publications like the New York Times and Time, just to name a few.
Approach this song, "Thola Amadlozi," with caution. It's a serious earworm and is likely to be stuck in your head for a while. I don't know much of Fassie's music (yet), but "Wedding Day" and "Ag Shame Lovey" are also worth a spin.
