Afropop Worldwide and Thomas Mapfumo
An in-depth article about Afropop Worldwide and a 2005 interview with Mapfumo.
I'm sure I'm like many people who knew nothing about African music but found something in it that appealed to me, in that I soon gravitated to Afropop Worldwide, "a Peabody Award winning radio show about African music." Here's an in-depth interview with founders Sean Barlow and Banning Eyre.
Thomas Mapfumo was one of the first African musicians whose music reached out and grabbed me, decades ago. I have yet to read Lion Songs: Thomas Mapfumo And The Music That Made Zimbabwe, by the aforementioned Banning Eyre, but I'll get around to it one of these days.
Speaking of Eyre and Mapfumo, here's a 2005 interview in which the former chats with the latter.
And here's Mapfumo live in Zimbabwe, in 2018, with an appearance by the late Oliver Mtukudzi.
